WHAT ARE OUR BOTTLES MADE FROM ?

Its Plant Not Plastic biodegradable bottles are made from 100% polylactic acid ("PLA").

WHAT IS PLA ?

PLA is an organic compound made from dextrose (sugar), using annually renewable plants such as corn, sugarcane, and cassava. Our bottles come from corn. By its nature, PLA is chemical and toxin free, biodegradable, and recyclable without detriment to the environment.

HOW DO YOU MAKE PLA ?

Science! The plants are put through a milling process to extract the starch (glucose). Enzymes are added to convert the glucose to dextrose via a process called hydrolysis. Microorganisms then ferment this dextrose into lactic acid. A proprietary two-step process then transforms lactic acid molecules into rings of lactide.

ARE THE BOTTLES MADE FROM GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS?

No they are not, but we cannot guarantee 100% that there was no GM crop present when the fields were harvested because of possible cross contamination during wind pollination (a.k.a. anemophily). Many of the world’s most important crops - invluding wheat, rice, corn, rye, barley, and oats - are wind pollinated so it's a pretty common phenomenon. That said, any trace of GM will be removed during the production process, that’s why we certify our bottles as GM Free.

ARE THERE ANY HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN THE BOTTLES ?

Nope! Our bottles are made 100% from plants - meaning no harmful toxins leach into the water.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I HAVE FINISHED WITH THE BOTTLE ?

Refill and Reuse! Otherwise, our plastic free bottles can be put straight into general waste or recycling - they will be sorted at the waste transfer stations. If facilities exist in your area they can go into food or green waste collections. Please refer to your local council rules for more specifics of how your council recycles.

You can rest easy knowing you are using a eco friendly and biodegradable bottle solution.

ARE THE BOTTLES COMPOSTABLE ?

Yes! Our plant bottle is fully compostable and biodegradable. It will degrade In a commercial compost facility in around 3 months' in a good managed home compost heap around 12 – 18 months.

DO THE BOTTLES HAVE LABELS GLUED TO THEM ?

Nope! we don’t use labels, all our plastic free bottles are printed using a natural vegetable ink.

TELL ME ABOUT PLA AND RECYCLING.

Sure! All recyclable items have a resin identification code ("RIC") that defines the resin the product is made of. PLA, as a bioplastic, has RIC 7. This means it is recyclable under certain conditions, adn those conditions vary throughout Australia. The easiest way to find out if your Council takes RIC 7 is to check the notes on your bin, or contact your Council. In Western Australia, most Councils will accepts Its Plant Not Plastic bottles for recycling in the yellow kerb bin. Please be aware that hen recycling any plastic bottle, the cap must be removed (caps go to landfill).

DO THEY COME IN PLASTIC WRAPPING ?

No, they are packed in boxes of 20 in recycled unbranded cardboard boxes which we are happy to collect and reuse for your next order.

AND FINALLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY ……

CAN I REFILL MY BOTTLE ?

Yes! Our bottles are made to be refilled as they are robust, free from artificial chemicals, and generally great to hold. Please do not put them in a dishwasher or leave empty in the sun as (like most of us) they do not like the intense heat.
